Back to School Supplies for Crocheters
It’s back to school season, and the sales are everywhere. But even if you don’t need supplies for school, you can still take advantage of the sales to grab a few helpful items for your crochet journey! Be prepared and focus on your crochet instead of digging through the junk drawer for a highlighter you *swear* was just there.
Writing Utensils & Notebooks
There’s always notes to make, whether you are altering a pattern, tracking your progress, or designing a pattern of your own. Treat yourself to some nice pencils and fun notebooks to make every part of your journey more enjoyable. I prefer a spiral bound notebook so I can leave it open to the page I’m working on, and a good mechanical pencil so I can easily erase my mistakes.
Scissors
A good pair of scissors is a treasure that should be hidden. If you have family who like to borrow your good scissors, it helps to have a nice, sharp backup pair.
Rulers
Measurement is a huge part of crocheting something, whether you’re measuring a gauge swatch, the size of a finished item, or checking your yarn weight with the WPI. Grab a solid wooden ruler to add to your collection for accurate linear measurements.
Highlighters
We’ve all lost our spot when following a pattern before. If you prefer to print your patterns, get a couple highlighters to help track your progress. (If you prefer to track your progress with your phone or tablet, consider interactive patterns from Ribblr.)
Markers or Pencil Crayons
These can come in handy for choosing colors for your project, especially if you’re a designer. Try sketching out your future project and coloring it in to get a more visual idea of how it will look when you’re finished.
Push Pins
If you’re planning on blocking any projects on a foam blocking board, push pins can be a great alternative to T pins.
Poster Board
If you plan on sharing pictures of your projects, a clean poster board can make a great backdrop! (White poster board can scuff easily, so I recommend a plastic poster board that can be wiped clean when necessary.)
Pencil Cases/Desk Organizers
Keep your supplementary supplies organized, or even store your hooks in a large enough case. Keeping an organized workspace means less time tidying it up, and more time crocheting! A desktop pen holder or organizer can keep hooks in a central, easy to find location, and one with multiple compartments can help to organize hooks by size.
Is there anything I’m missing? What non-crochet item have you found helpful in your craft? Let me know!
